English Taught Program in China (Non-scholarship Program)

English taught program in China has successfully attracted international students from all around the world. You don’t need to be fluent in Chinese language to study in bachelor or master degree program in China. International students can receive education with medium of instruction in English and explore potential opportunities in China for the future. Prospective students need to consider whether they should apply for Chinese or English taught degree program. They also need to consider which type of English taught program they should apply for. There are two types of English taught program in China.

International Student Admission Only Program

If you study in this type of English taught program, you won’t take any classes with local students. If your main purpose to study in China is building guanxi (relationship) and hopefully this relationship can be helpful for future career. You should not enroll in this type of program.

Most of the English taught programs provided by local universities are international student admission only program. You can find a lot of information for this type of program. Many of them are in fact never opened or had already closed due to lack of enrolled students. Also, you should be aware that the level of English among teaching and administrative staffs may not be as high as you expected in this type of English taught program. Many enrolled students quit the programs after one year or even one semester.

English Taught Program with Local Student

There are international universities in China that provide programs with international curriculum. Students will receive foreign university academic credits and degrees. International universities in China have their own campuses and have operated in China with excellent reputation for years. They also recruit local Chinese students through the China's National College Entrance Examination of China (or Gaokao). You will take all classes with local students and all courses are taught in English. The quality of education is much better than international student admission only program. Not many local universities provide English taught programs with local and international student admission. How to Choose the Right Program

There are good English taught programs in China. You just need to choose the right program. Accreditation is important when you apply for English taught program in China. It helps determine if the program meets or exceeds minimum quality standards. For instance, the University of Nottingham has campuses in UK, China and Malaysia. Same courses offered in different campuses receive the same accreditation. Some of the majors in University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) have 2+2 model. Students can spend two years in China campus, two years in UK campus.

Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a joint university founded by Xian Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. Undergraduate students can receive two degrees: XJTLU degree and UK degree from the University of Liverpool. It has its own accreditation as it cannot be considered as the University of Liverpool’s China campus. International Business School at XJTLU is the youngest business school to gain the Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA). As of July 2021, only 11 universities in China hold the Triple Crown accreditation.

There are lots of scholarship opportunities for English taught programs in China. You don’t have to look for programs with lowest tuition fee. Some universities also offer free Chinese language courses for international students studying in English taught programs.
