On May 26, 2000, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Urban Construction College merged to form Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
The predecessor of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology was Huazhong Institute of Technology. In order to meet the actual needs of the urgent need for professional talents in the national economic construction, in November 1952, the Central South Military and Political Committee decided to establish Huazhong Institute of Technology in Wuhan according to the instructions of the central government on the adjustment of colleges and departments across the country. Huazhong Institute of Technology concentrates all the mechanical departments of the former Wuhan University, Hunan University, Guangxi University, and Nanchang University and the electric power department of the electrical department, the power part of the mechanical department of the South China University of Technology and the electric power department of the electrical department, as well as some basic teachers of these institutions. And equipment, as the foundation of the school, open the road of building a multi-disciplinary industrial university from a high starting point. In October 1960, Huazhong Institute of Technology was approved as a national key construction institution of higher learning. In January 1988, the State Education Commission approved the change of Huazhong Institute of Technology to "Huazhong University of Science and Technology".
